Period poverty is a global issue and national issue defined as the lack of access or inability to afford menstrual hygiene tools and education. This includes sanitary products, clean water, lack of access to proper sanitation facilities (WASH services), and waste management. It affects people across all income levels and countries, but disproportionately impacts those in low-income brackets and marginalized communities.

Racial disparities exist, Black and Latina women are more likely to stuggle with period poverty than White woman.
